Tomato Tomato. We all have our different vocal twangs when pronouncing certain words; it’s one of the easiest ways to tell what region of the country you’re from.
Joshua Katz, a Ph. D student in statistics at North Carolina State University, just published visualizations of a linguistics survey that analyzed how Americans pronounce certain words. The map above depicts the pronunciation of “laywer” with the red areas representing it with an “oye” sound as in “boy,” and the blue areas representing an “ah” as in “saw.”
